All that glitters is not gold, but it sure looks like it, right? I discovered these treasures at Goodwill last week thinking they were too cute to leave, even if they are plastic replicas. At the very worst I could always pop out the mirrors and do a chalk board or something. I am hoping at least one will look good in our powder room, but that is where you come in!

Here is our existing mirror. Boring, right?

This is probably the hardest picture I have ever taken! And talk about a freaky looking arm, I had no idea I even had a weird elbow dimple...
But my two concerns are:
1. All our hardware is chrome, will a gold mirror look crazy?
2. Is it too small?

So here are the options, PLEASE share your thoughts!
1. Leave existing mirror
2. Paint existing mirror frame
3. Use oval mirror
4. Paint oval mirror some other color and use it
5. Use curvy mirror
6. Paint curvy mirror and use it
7. None of the above, look for a new mirror altogether.
Hope you have a gold and glittery kind of day~

Hi!
My opinion for what it's worth. I think you should leave the existing mirror and put the curvy one on top but paint them both the same color. That way the deco mirror isn't too small for the room and it also gives you depth.
I know it wasn't an option but maybe it could work?!?

I vote option #2 paint existing mirror frame. Even though I'm loving the new mirrors, they do seem a little small. But if you think you're going to paint the new mirrors anyway, I would give them a try. Sometimes it's hard to tell if something will work until you try it.

Lulu said...

My vote goes to #2 or #7. I agree that the curvy mirror is too small and the gold does clash with the silver. But then again maybe the 2-tone look is in and I just don't know about that yet? :) Would LOVE the idea of a bigger curvy mirror painted a dIstressed black or a modern neon color to contrast with the "traditional" curves. :) Love your blog!

Hmmmm...what if you painted the oval ornamental mirror white and mounted over your existing mirror?

Anonymous said...

I'd go #4 and do that distressed white thing you do so well...it's a little small if you would actually be USING it for much, but as long as the width isn't much smaller than the sink (can't really tell from the picture), I think the size is fine for a powder room. Can't wait to see what you decide to do. I LOVE your blog!

I love the new mirrors, but they do look too small to replace the existing mirror on their own. I like the idea of layering one of the new mirrors over the existing mirror and painting the frames to match.

Mary said...

Hey Holly...I hate to say it...but I think the new mirrors are too small. The existing mirror is a little plain...not that it is bad, it is a great looking, but I think with the simple lines of your sink and faucet, I would do something of a conversation piece for the mirror. Something with some shape to a unique finish to it. A powder room is petite, usually, so there are not many opportunities for a WOW factor. The mirror is so focal in a small room, I think it would be perfect to do something interesting there. Does this suggestion just complicate things? Sorry! ;o) ~mary~

#6. I am in LOVE with that curvy mirror but I think the gold clashes with all the silver in that bathroom.

I'm sure whatever you do will look fab :) I wanna see after pics!

I think silver & gold can be mixed together if you have other accents to play that up. I like the idea of hanging both mirrors on the corner walls like your other post. I love that they are similar, but yet different. I think it would be unexpected, but fabulous!

I say......
4. Paint oval mirror some other color and use it

It's a powder room. It's supposed to be dramatic. How much mirror do you need. It is big enough to do the trick.

Use both, do a layered effect.
I would paint both frames the same color. It would add some interest.

I think you should use the new oval mirror-but painted. I vote for a bold color like an aqua blue or black high gloss. Although white would look pretty too!

Unknown said...

Whichever of the three mirrors you use, I think paint will do a world of wonders. Maybe black? Maybe a bold color? The size of the new mirrors seems fine to me. They are nearly as tall as the existing one. Actually, after looking at your photos again, I think the problem with the gold mirrors is not so much the size as the shape in relation to the 3-light light fixture. For that reason, I think the existing one might be your best bet--with a new paint color:)

Mr. + Mrs. B said...

I vote #4, I think the oval one is nice, but I don't like the gold. I think a distressed white in the manner you do so well, will look so cut in the bathroom.
The size of the mirror is fine for a powder room IMO. Can't wait to see what you choose.

Ange said...

I would paint the curvy mirror either a chrome finish or whatever accent colour you're using in the bathroom....Red would look funky!

Kandy Newton said...

I would have thought the new mirrors are only too small if you use that room to put on your make-u or need a big mirror to reflect the light. I do think all the mirror frames need to be painted though - either a really funky colour, although that isn't really 'you', but how about the same grey colour that your baby photo is framed in?
Another thought, if you have the new mirrors where people can/might touch the plastic frames will you/they be slightly disappointed? Maybe it would be a better idea to have them up behind a sofa/chair/cupboard or somewhere similar, where they will not be touched. Just a thought.

MrsKBJ said...

Those mirrors are cute, but I say keep looking. I am sure you will find the perfect home for them. Maybe going up the stairs mixed in with your nautical paintings? I don't like the gold for the bathroom, but even if you paint them they are too small. You will find the perfect mirror when you aren't looking! :O)

I would love the mirror layered on top of your existing mirror - either painted white or silver metallic.

the gold mirrors look great in the first pic but I feel like lighting in that room is really helping them out. In a small space like a bathroom I'm not the gold would have the same effect. I absolutely love the curvy one. If it's not a main bathroom I see no problem with a smaller mirror, if the effect it has is big. The bathroom seems rather plain as it is.

lisa said...

I agree with melissalynnshelley. The new mirrors would be perfect (I LOVE the interesting curves) if only the light fixtures weren't so wide (and square). I'd paint the original frame.

The Real Estate Talker said...

What if you used both mirrors, one in place of the white one and one on the side wall next to the sink, and painted them the grey color you have used before.
Good luck with the decision

i like the curvy mirror better especially since its a little bigger. i dont mind when different finishes are used together but they need to have something in common in the room like another frame. i've seen a finish that is like a silver color and then gold on top and then kinda sand down the gold a little so some silver shows thru.

Caroline @ The Feminist Housewife said...

I think you should paint the oval mirror! (Maybe a fun color to make it "pop")

As for being too small, I think it would look fine. But you can always try it and if it doesn't work out try a different option! Yay for paint!

The curvy mirror might be a little small, and difficult to see one's self in!

The oval would be a nice mix - adding funk, still being large enough, but not be to crazy!

rachel blazer said...

if you like the shape of it & the size relative to the sink (i can't tell from the picture), then paint the curvy or oval one a fun color- maybe turquoise blue or shiny black? could be really dramatic & fun!
nice finds- i like both new mirrors! and i like the old one, too- if the new ones are too small, just paint the old one. it has good lines, but you could use a bit of color to make it pop. nice thing about paint- you can always change it!
happy monday,

I like the size of the oval one for a powder room - I think something bigger would be too overpowering. But it definitely needs painting and distressing!

Hey holly
I am new to looking at your blog. But I figure why not put in my input. :)

A cheap fix would be to just paint the mirror white of black to match But in the long run... I love the gold mirror and I think you should replace the sink faucet and light fixture to coordinate with it. I don't think you should paint it. But thats just me. Thanks for letting us share.

I have the gilt oval ornate one or one that is very very similar and I painted it a distressed cream, which I love but imo fwiw would not go in your powder room the room looks too modern esp with the lights above ....I do like the existing mirror but would love it painted a deep rich magenta :)

Leeler Creative said...

I vote for option #4, go with the oval mirror and paint it a great accent color. The white mirror is too "hard" both in terms of its lines and in the feel that it gives the room. The oval mirror, in any accent color (besides gold, ha!) would look fab and give the room a great feel. You could go with a soft turquoise, black, red, orange or even go with a silver foil. I see a lot of people touching on the fact that they feel the mirror is small, however, I think this room is o.k. with that size mirror.

Erin Southwell said...

I would paint the oval mirror white and use that! It will jive well with all of your white and it is much more eye-catching than a plain rectangle (like I have!!)

Great finds as always, holly!

Katie Church said...

Here is my first crazy idea - not sure if it would work... paint the new mirror an antique silver tone. Put some white on white wall paper over the mirrored part of the existing mirror and leave it where it is. Then hang the new mirror over that. Like I said don't know if it would work but maybe some variation...

Second - hang a white shelf just above the water fixture then "lean" the new mirror on that. Still paint it in a antique silver.

Unknown said...

I would consider painting the existing mirror (it fits your space nicely) a soothing color, like a silver sage.
You could then place oval mirror on the wall opposite the sink. Maybe paint the frame silver and the glass chalkboard paint. although whatever you do will look amazing.

Anonymous said...

Opposites attract! Your square, modern sink could use a jolt of curvy and feminine. Since it's a powder room, you can monkey with the proportions, but I'd use the oval mirror since it has a bit more heft to it. And then I'd paint it pale aqua.

Read and See said...

Repaint the existing mirror frame. I really like its simple lines and it's the right size, too. The new ones seem a little small, and I've never been a fan of curly goldy frames, though they could look nice if painted lighter and antiqued in your special way!

Stephanie said...

My vote is to use the curvier of the two gold mirrors and paint it. Maybe prime it white, then paint it silver metallic with a bit of an aged look?

cassidy said...

Paint the curvy mirror and use it instead. Gold clashes with the faucet and the oval isn't as fun as the curvy one! But now I'm TOTALLY curious to see what you actually decide to do, so you have to post the end result ASAP!

Melinda said...

Use the oval mirror and paint the frame silver! That would look fabulous in your powder room. Very elegant. :)

Kristy said...

The problem is not which mirror..the problem is your boring white walls. lol remember you asked.

Paint the walls something..anything other than white...then kep the existing mirror.....or swap it out for one of the other's painted in a coordinating color. The whole thing looks boring now because it's white on white on white on white..... Paint the existing fixture black..paint one of the mirrors black...and choose a color for the walls.

Taryn said...

I would paint on of the new mirrors white/grey and do that thing you do! I don't think it will be too small- it is just a powder room- right?

I love the new mirrors- the old one is fine- but you are right- a little boring.

Unknown said...

THANK YOU!!! I love ALL the ideas!
I still have no idea what the final product will be but to let a few comments know:
1. The entire room was formerly black wallpaper. Yes, black! So I am not painting the walls again for a LONG time.
2. There is already a shelf over the toilet, and because of the height of the faucet I am not sure a shelf there would work, but I do like the idea of leaning a mirror.
3. The entire room is new, from floors to light to the sink so I probably can't justify new faucets, or light.

But I think I will try and see what happens with painting the existing mirror, only because I have no where else to put it anyways I might as well see where that goes.

I have to say though, the idea of layering mirrors is VERY intriguing! Maybe something I will have to play with soon.

Krystal Wight Armstrong said...

Oh those are such cool mirrors! I really love them together, so maybe someone's idea to keep them along the stairwell would be fun... sperately I don't know if they're quite as awesome. I'm also not even a huge gold fan, but these looks so great as-is that I kinda don't want to see them painted over {:-/

I would not choose the wavy one for the bathroom, I'd love to pick the oval, but it does seem sortof small for the space (& I always like more mirror space with good lighting even as a visitor to someone elses powder room). The idea of resting it on a little shelf over the sink might be cool...but there's still the issue of the clashing finishes. So if you kept it and leaned it on a shelf I'd probably have to paint it grayish/blueish/silver...but would be sad to lose the gold.

N/M, I tried to find your new bathroom pics, and I see a similar shelf already over the toilet, so that may not look right on the same wall? (Can you show us more photos of what the rest of the room looks like now?) The pics I could find actually make me think the current mirror works fine, but you could add some light grey paint to it, or just something subtly more colorful, and that would be fine. (honsetly sorry my 'comments' are always so long). Can't wait to see what you do!

I vote #4 or #6. It may just be me, but I can't mix a gold frame with chrome everything else (although I catch myself in saying that, because we just moved into a new house and installed oil-rubbed bronze towel bars, t.p. roll holder, and shower curtain rod in a bathroom with all chrome hardware, and I love it).

I say that you should paint the vintage looking mirror and take out the "boring" looking one you have now!

I would paint those mirrors an off white and hang them in the room.
Then add a scrolly pediment above the existing mirror painted in the same creme color. That way you would have a romantic look going on.

Okay....it seems like we all have some of the same opinions: Paint the oval amazingness of a mirror white (duh.) with some silvery antique wear showing through, then hang it over the existing blah white rectangle mirror that's already there for a layered effect. Whammo...instant cuteness. :) But hey...that's EXACTLY what everyone else is saying. Great minds think alike...and you started it all with that dimple arm shot. ;) Thanks for letting us in your world!

My vote is to keep the existing mirror and paint it, I think painting it with your mistint that you used in your frames on the opposite wall would be PERFECT! The new mirrors, although gorgeous, would clash with the frame wall that you did in the bathroom.

Hey Holly! I love the new finds but I think they're a little small. If I were you, I would paint out the oval one. (Either in a white distressed, or a high gloss black) I would hang the oval one in the center and then do a little grouping of smaller mirrors around it. (Similar to one of the pics you posted below but not nearly as many mirrors. I think it'd look lovely... like everything else in your home. ;) Have fun with whatever you choose. Can't wait to see how it turns out.

Paint oval!

Tammy said...

Okay here is my opinion- not that it is that important :)
Paint the big existing mirror chrome to have it stand out from the white wall. Then hang the oval mirror painted white over it with a nice ribbon. It gives depth, some intrigue and layering which is always good. It keeps the gender neutral square mirror and upates it with chrome then throws in a bit of romantic girl with the white curli-q oval one.

Love the blog. I even took your advice and ordered the spray gun you have. Can't wait to get it out of the box and see how it works. Do you do anything in particular with your paint before putting it in the sprayer- like watering it down any? Just wondering.

Can't wait to see what you do in the bath..

I am thinking that I may leave the existing one for now, but I am torn between doing a really funky color or something MUCH more chippy and old... and thank you so much to those of you who went back and looked at my old pics or remembered my photo wall and shelf! Great memory.

Tammy, I do water it down slightly depending on how thick it seems. Some brands are thinner than others and don't need as much. Have fun with the sprayer!

My first time leaving a comment but I love the new mirrors. I also loved the wall display of some in that Martha picture you posted. How about getting a brushed nickle silver type paint, they have at Lowes, paint you existing mirror and the new ones, then arrange them on the wall together, adding some smaller ones to help balance it out. I can't tell if your wall is big enough for this though. If not, to add some spark, just paint the white mirror you have the brushed nickle to match you light and faucets.

I don't agree with everyone else.I dont think the oval mirror seems to small. Especially if you added a sconce or something to each side of it. I would paint it a color. oh yes I would definitely paint it. Maybe a pearly white - or a white with a touch of gray? I remember seeing a piece of furniture that you had painted that had some gray in it - just enough for contrast. It may look nice against the white wall.

It looks like it may be a little too small, but it's hard to accurately tell without being in the room in person!

Another idea would be to do something to jazz up the existing mirror...maybe put something on the wall on either side (not sure if space would allow for this option), or some sort of etching/frosting in the corners of the mirror. Those just popped into my mind immediately.

I have been enjoying reading your blog and seeing all the pics of your progress!

I just saw Kim's suggestion on the fabric idea over the current mirror, and just wanted to add a vote for that. I think that could be really cool (though possibly a little hard to keep nice, next to the sink?) I've seen fabric adhered to dorm-room cinder-block walls like wallpaper with this diy mix of water and somekind of starch, and that's what I pictured doing to lay it smooth on the frame. Creative idea, Kim :)
