Living Room

 photo _MG_5828_zps9093c91e.jpg

I realize after putting together the photos for this post that I didn't really take a lot of overall room shots. I also realized that I haven't shared many over all photos of how our main floor is laid out. Or at least that's how it feels to me. So if anyone is interested in getting a better feel for where all these spaces are and how they connect just call me out on it! Who knows, maybe you've been picking up everything I've been putting down and you know this place like the back of your hand.

I shared these thrifted side tables and their transformation back in May, but your haven't really gotten to see much of them in their natural habitat. They were part of your average seventies living room suite (which was all there to take in, by the way) and I usually would have walked right past them.

But I noticed the really cool handles on the drawers which caught my fancy, and then I noticed that they had a nifty bottom surface, and then I realized they were the perfect scale and height. The only issue (at that moment) was they were not even close to what I envisioned in here!

But now I think they are kind of fabulous and made for this very spot. All thanks to this little old brass drawer pull.

In the spirit of keeping it real, take a peek through my looking glass at what is still waiting to be done:
the stair case. Still.
Oy.

I need to get off the procrastination train ASAP.

Blending the old treasures I love and the mix of modern is my biggest challenge. But I feel so much more at home since we've started creeping away from the all-distressed furniture. I LOVE a piece or two of chippy old furniture, and when you sell shabby furniture for a living it is easy for it to take over, but since I've stopped painting and refurbishing furniture to sell I have really enjoyed shifting the focus back to mixing all the styles I love. Not letting one take over my house entirely. Because that really isn't 'Me', and it definitely wasn't Sean!

I found some great pillows on sale a couple weeks ago at Indigo, like this disco ball pillow for $20, as well as some nice linen pillows I am crafting up a DIY on I will share soon. The light blush pillow (which is actually darker looking to me in real life) is one of those purchases you make when you've looked everywhere. It is the first and only pillow I have found in this color (I had been hunting down a blush colored throw pillow for a month solid!) but the compromise is that this is what the other side looks like:

You can't win them all.

I need more book storage. STAT! The pile of unread books is beside my bed, and the pile of already read books is down here, piling on the floor and on top of the cabinet.

So much for my minimalist notions...

So now I'm curious what you did originally have in mind for your coffee table, since it wasn't what you ended up with.
Also, just an idea- if you don't like the funny dove on the back of your pillow, and you're already flipping it around to hide one side anyway; why not straight-up paint over the whole back side? With one of your nice white-ish colors, or with actual fabric paint? It would probably take a few coats, and since it's fabric, you might get some 'worn' looking spots around the curves & crinkles of the corners, but it might be kinda cool to have a 2-sided pillow, with different textures, one that would fit the shabby chic 1/2 of the room, even ;)

I like your distressed look. I've never been able to get into modern - too cold for me.

Is your sofa from Pottery Barn? I am going to purchase a white slipcovered sofa in a few weeks when I redo my living room, and I am still trying to decide on an arm/cushion style. I love the look of yours. I love your decorating style but, I have to say, your kitchen is my favorite redo of your whole house. <3

I think the room looks great. Having seen previous versions of this space, I have to say that it looks much more homey than in the past. Do you get that sense when you're in it?

The striped rug in the room is perfection! Love all the vintage books and the way they are placed.

I actually LOL'd upon seeing that bird pillow! If that were mine, I would rock that bird side & then flip it to the pretty, solid-colored side when guests came over. I sorta love him (her?). ;)

The handles on those tables are to die for. Loving the collected over time look of this room, H!!

Oh my gosh...the bird is pure awesomeness. Like one of the most hideous things ever. And yet the fact that it's the perfect color of what you were looking for just makes me love you more....it made my night. I adore the silverish bufffet. It brings such a different dimension to the room that I can't quite put my finger on but I love it. I love the changing taste! Thanks for sharing it with us. Marissa ps- I say go with the stairs. Make no apologies and act like they're part of the plan. :)

I would love to see overall room shots of your home. Having been reading your blog for a long time it would be nice to see how your rooms have changed. The living room looks beautiful, agreeing with The White City Project it feels just right now - through a computer screen anyway :)

I love the light touches to this room, paired with the carpet that catches your eye! I also really like the fresh touch of flowers, I just got this home decor jar and I want to add it to my room that doesn't have much color. Thanks for sharing!
