The defense will now plead his case.

Oh boy! I may have my work cut out for me here. I am a firm believer in "if it aint broke then don’t fix it!" but what about change always being a good thing.

Maybe I should plead the 5th here so I don’t end up in the dog house. The reason(s) behind my madness was quite simple. I tried to think of a few things that the room had to offer and see if they could somehow be improved. Of course I wanted it to look good but functionality was a bigger factor.

We use our family room the most, mainly because it hosts our only T.V in the house, and it is also the landing pad for all of Wrens toys. I wanted to take advantage of the only 2 windows in the room so I moved the sectional to the opposite side, this way we can not only look out the 2 windows but we can also peek out of the other 7 windows scattered along the same wall that enters into our eating nook & kitchen. Another added plus was that because the family room has a sunken floor that kind-of enters further into one section than the other, it allowed for the sectional to come further back and give the room a bigger feeling. The T.V was the hardest part. Initially I wanted it in the corner, but it just looked too awkward and severely detracted from the fireplace (the 2 large rectangular black objects 1.fireplace 2.T.V seemed to be fighting for the spotlight amongst all the white.) I did want to mount it above the fireplace so it could appear symmetrical, however aside from Holly saying NO! Way, the wood burning fireplace posed potential stress on our single T.V. The only area left was between the windows. The final nail in the coffin for me was the placement of Wrens toy-chest. Previously it was somewhat central in the room, which meant that toys could be easily scattered everywhere. Often when something came up outside of the family room toys would easily be dragged into the kitchen and beyond. Now with the toy-chest tucked into the corner, the mess seems to be a-little more controlled.

The only downside that I can think of is how we used be able to sit in our eating nook and glance at the T.V while we were eating. Now with the T.V against the wall it is out of sight. Ironically for me it may be a downside because I can no longer watch sports while dining, but on the other hand feeding Wren may become easier without the distraction of the T.V. Is it worth though, losing the joy of eating and watching sports vs. ease of family dinner time? That is tuff, but all the above positives overpowered the 1 negative.

I probably should have jazzed up the room with some accessories to help favor my point but I must admit I am terrible in that department.

Photobucket

Oh how this room still needs so much more work.
Also apologies for such harsh photos, I clearly need to learn some tips from the master.

Photobucket

I still think it holds all of the previous charm and beauty. Now it simply operates with a little more efficiency. I really wanted to hang my 4x8 foot Edmonton Oiler Wayne Gretzky photo but Holly said the only place for that is inside of a garbage truck. Just kidding I don’t really have one, but I think she might still have said that if I did. Haha.

As always, Thanks for Reading!

Sorry ... I think it is better the other way. The sectional cuts the room off the way you placed it. Also I don't think you want to look at the TV with sun streaming in those windows ... hard on the eyes.

Pat yourself on the back Sean! You wanted change and you went for it. let Holly do some sprucing though, she has that magic touch ; )

TV's are always such a problem, even the flat ones!

I think it is lovely to see outside while seated. It looks nice both ways though. Like you say, once accessorized it will look even better. Love the silver poofs.

Csn I ask where you got that lovley sectional.

I give you an "A' for effort, although I am not sure your layout works. I would move Wren's toy chest to serve as the t.v. stand between the windows, shimmy the sectional towards the fireplace by about 2 feet, and use the small side table (currently tucked into the corner) as an end table. I wouldn't use the folded table in there at all. Not bad for a newbie, though! lol

Sorry. Liked it better the way it was...

I think it is good if you cannot see the TV while at the table. That way your meals are a family thing!

Would the TV fit mounted between the windows? Then you could have curtains just on the outside edges of the windows. Or you could have curtains such that they could be just on the outside or even cover the TV if you have company and/or want a cozy-fire-and-game-night!

Good try Sean, I see where you were going with it. But I liked it better the way it was.

Did you see #99's birthday interview. Makes me feel old! I like it this way, and my only suggestion (not that you asked!) would be to get a chunkier tv stand/cabinet. I prefer not having my back to windows so I like the tv there.

Hey, Sean! Good job! One concern: is the TV toddler safe there ? I have boys and I can just picture them shaking the leg of that table and crashing the TV.... Yeah, that whole distressed look is really good with boys!

I like the new way but would just try to find a chest for the tv rather than the table (I'm sure you two have one somewhere). I think the room looks bigger and you can actually talk to someone in the kitchen/dining area now.

I like the fact that the sofa seating lets you fact the fireplace as well as the TV. I really like sectionals. I think what bothers me is what the TV is on. I like the idea of putting it on the toy cabinet and trying that out. So fun to try out a new layout. Keep at it.

Holly, nicely done on letting Sean get some of a say in how things are done. I try to let my husband Clay have some say in the decor of our house and usually we either reach a common agreement or he lets me win. The only thing I haven't won with is these three ornament monkeys that he insists sit on our shelf at home...not my favourite, but it's his home too. Although they might someday go missing... :)

I have been following your blog for a while incognito, but this "situation" has made me come out of hiding to comment. Sean, seriously...no amount of accessories could help. Holly has a real and true eye for style. Not to mention those electrical cords and wren...not a good mix. Anyway, just my two cents. You get a star of bravery for your attempt though!

Don't you think that Holly could doll up a thrifty frame and you could mount the tv over the fireplace? What about those mirrors that do great tricks when the tv is off...looks like a regular mirror? just sayin'... You gave it the ol' college try. Good deal!

awh i feel like the ladies are being pretty hard on you Sean! i, happen to like the setup. quite a bit. with some tweaking, of course. but as we ALL know, every room needs tweaked at almost any given time.

maybe the biggest thing would be to continue using Wren's toy chest as the tv stand also for safety/practicality reasons.

but as we all know, your beautiful and talented Mrs. will have your layout working perfectly for your family in no time and you'll both be able to call it a joint effort. :)

BRAVO!

I like the room this way. I agree a more substantial chest would be better for the TV. You could hang a mirror over the sofa and reflect the TV image to the dining table.

I like the room the way it is now. You can try hanging a mirror over the sofa to reflect the image to the eating area. The table the TV is on does look a bit out of style with the rest of the room. I think it needs more substance like a chest or small dresser or wide night stand.

I like that you took the risk of change after thinking through so many aspects of how you use the room and where Wren's toy are!

I like how it turned out! Now just recruit Holly to do the decor touches and it will be perfect!

Sometimes I wish we could get rid of our TV...they are so hard to position a room around!

In my humble opinion...better the other way.

Hello,

I actually like it this way. We have the same type of room. We have a step down into our living room. I think that it opens up the room from the kitchen/dining area into your family room. It look like before some of the couch blocked the area where you step down into the room. I could be wrong.
It looks nice. Thank you for sharing.

Love the layout the old way. May I ask where you got the white rug? I need one. :)

Brenna said...

Bet you'd never have so many outside opinions about YOUR living space, huh? ;)
We have a wall of windows in our living room as well and have decided it would not be pleasant to have our tv on that wall for viewing sake, so it is on the opposing wall. I say, if it works for you, great! It's not like you can't move it around again. Thankfully the furniture is not super glued to the floor. ;)

I would love to sit on those pretty white sofas and gaze out your windows. Wonder what I would see.

I like the new arrangement! It just feels- cool, open, and airy. Of course, I often impulsively move the furniture only to watch it shuffled back to its original spot by my husband. Good luck!

I think it looks great both ways. I have thought about re-arranging our living room and having the tv in front of the windows just as yours is. We have a large great room so right now the couch and end tables feel like they're "floating" without any wall to ground it. And if you don't like it in a few weeks move it back. No harm done!

Since you're looking for comments, I'll chime in and say I still like it a LOT better the other way -- despite the defense's detailed case. :) I like that you're willing to try something new, though!

I also liked it better the first way...especially the ottomans. Who wants to put your feet up on to a hard surface? But this way looks great too...just needs a little zhushing. :)

Clearly you're not done. Once you tweak things, put the rug in and get something on the wall above the couch it will be great! But yes, that TV with little ones toddling around? Scary! Maybe use the chest that's in front of the couch for the TV table?

Ah the dreaded TV. I swear that it musy have been a man that a few years ago said something like .. "You know we have this UGLY thing that every house HAS to have let's just make it bigger and uglier" Have a look over at www.tracyporter.com under her videos choose "London Wall". I have done a similar effect but all in white (except for the BLACK TV !!)
