Since it is a new year and a new decade I am going to give the plant thing another shot. I am dedicated to keeping my plants alive for longer than a couple months, and so this was my first attempt back at it. Did you know that Home Depot has a 1 year warranty on all their house plants, even if you kill it? Neither did I, but when I was chatting with their garden centre manager she give me some great tips and that piece of advice to fall back on in case my green thumb takes some time to perfect.
But even if I lose my receipt I am not too worried because these cute little speckly guys were on clearance for $0.50. So I grabbed 6 of them, picked up a cement pot at HomeSense for $5.99 and voila! An instant Spring-like vibe for the coffee table (I could use a HUGE dose of Spring right about now) all for under $10.

So here's to a new chapter, and hopefully a good life for these little plants...

And speaking of new chapters I think I may take the plunge this week and go back to brunette (excuse the horrible attempt at correcting red-eye, I told you I am not computer literate at all).

While I like being a blonde, I am kind of digging darker hair these days.

Another trick to houseplants is succulents. They are impossible to kill. Love, love ferns, too!

All of my houseplants died consistently until I bought a peace lily - I now have two and they are thriving, which is amazing to me!

Look how cute you look! I like the brunette hair!

I think that those plants are poisonous? I had to get rid of all our houseplants when my oldest started crawling-- good excuse to indulge your black thumb:)

We got advice years ago from a plant expert who told us to figure out what we were actually doing with plants and figure out what plants would work under that care; she said that most people pick a plant on looks and then kill it because it doesn't work for them. So, for example, I do best with plants that thrive on neglect, combined with massive watering sprees at irregular intervals. My husband likes a regular watering schedule. Oh, and the current plan is that he takes care of the plants and if he travels he calls me the day they need to be watered and walks me through it. But if the plants die, it's not you: it's them!

Haha so true Sassy! I prefer to pass on the blame. But you are so right, I am a constant neglector and then over water. That as well as putting them too close to draughty doors and windows. Thankfully the horticulturalist walked me through which ones were good for me, and I am hoping these are it!

My House, My Garden I actually bought one of those too about a week ago! It seems to be in good health still so I am pretty thrilled~

cute pot!
I would of never guessed in a million years you were a brunette. The darker hair complements your skin tone quite nicely.

Thx for answering the seed pearl paint color. I will be picking up some this weekend :)

You know they make some really believable fake plants know, they will cost you. For me the cost is worth it so I don't have to think about them. Plus they are sitting on a shelf and no one can get close enough to tell if they are real. Good luck though maybe you can over come I could not and Hubby was so tired of dealing with it he gave me permission to spent whatever.

gorgeous!! My plants always die, I am terrible. I don't know if i over water, water to little or if it's the sunlight! But I never get it right.

CUTE hair color, I love it on you!

the darker color looks warmer! love it. Great tip for plant lovers. there is a gadgets that saves plants out there. its a moisture meter and can be found at your local nursery. you stick the long stick in the dirt then it tells you if the plant needs water or not. let me know if you have questions..i love plants..lulu

I am so jealous of your arrangement. I love a little bit of green here and there.
I always kill mine too, thinking about trying again though..

I killed every plant I had until I broke down and bought a set of ugly aqua globes. It works like a dream and my plants are thriving! I just hide them in discreet places in the back of the pot so you can't see them.

you're pretty. thanks for the inspiration to try a plant. i know nothing about them, but my bf loves plants in the house, so i might have to surprise him for v-day with a new plant. : ) he would love it.

Lulu, I actually invested in one and thought I was doing great for about 2 weeks but they really haven't made a huge improvement. The horticulturalist told me that with tropicals (which I seem to buy most) you also have to keep the leaves humid which is why I think they look so life less (our house is a dry wasteland in winter). But I am hoping the water meter in conjunction with they more hardy plants will by my recipe for success.

ChaCha, I have a few of those too, but reallllllly love the real ones (and at $0.50 they make it worthwhile to try again LOL).

Sarah, I have heard those globes are life savers!!! And I hear you can even get them at the dollar store now. I think the bigger plants would love those.

I've got many low-light house plants - ferns, ivies and more. They liven up my corners since fresh flowers are usually a 'treat' for me. Stick them near a lamp with a CFL and water once a week and they will do just fine. I have heard great things about the aqua globes as well - have fun!

What kind are they? So pretty!

Oh, I feel ya on the plants. And dark is the new blond. Go for it!

Thanks so much for sharing the info about Home Depot and the house plants. I had no idea - you're little dose of spring is totally you - what a great find at a great price. Besides all that, I just felt compelled to drop by and say I love you as a brunette! Terrific, that and well everything else on your site.

So nice to hear I'm not the only one prone to killing plants! I try so hard - which I'm pretty sure results in the over-watering part you were talking about.
Love your cement urn- I've been on the hunt for two for either side of the fireplace! I'm totally with you on being ready for some spring! I actually have been threatening to make the cherry blossoms that you made for Mother's Day last year!

I have actually managed to kill succulents! They were purchased at Ikea though...I'm wanting to buy a bigger plant, so I think I'll hit up Home Depot soon.

Darker hair really suits you as well Holly! So lucky, I wish I could go both ways, but I think I am a life-long brunette. Cute little pup with you in that picture!

Great new planter! I'm in the process of trying to figure out if we can grow any veggies inside or on the porch in containers (& I'm not known for a green thumb either), so great luck with yours!

You look so much younger there with darker hair (though it wasn't nearly as dark as I imagined from your statement). I LOVE your blonde locks, and am always seeing cute ways you work it in pics, that I would so love styling tips for! But the pretty natural looking, light brunette is lovely too. Do what makes you Happy!

PS- Where did you acquire the pretty sand dollar and starfish? Thanks :)

Holly, you may or may not recall me mentioning that the handsome hubby of mine works for Home Depot and I swear I still learn more helpful info. from you in regards to their policies etc. He's constantly mentioning how he'd like some plants in the house but I too am *Horrible* with a capital H at taking proper care of them. That return policy has me at least considering an attempt. :)

As for your hair, I am a "brunette for life" so of course I'm fond of a deep chocolate brown (chocolate anything is usually good, right?) but your blonde locks always have me secretly wishing I looked half as pretty as you do blonde. However, it seems you have the face (and lovely skin) for any color so go for it... it is easier to keep up with which may give you more time to care for your new plants. LOL!

Good luck! I admire your courage. I have great luck growing things outside but inside not so much.

I have given up on indoor plants too - I am not so good with them, or hanging pots either really! I say go with the brunette - I have and I'm loving it :)

Tough call on the hair, I would have guessed you were a blonde naturally but the brunette look is good as well, just maybe a light brunette? But what do I know?

Good luck with the house plants! I think it adds a warm personal touch.

Oh you'd look fabulous as either one! :)

P.S. Random question: How do you fill in knicks and scratches on furniture? Wood putty?

Unknown said...

Yuppers Little Nest, wood putty does the trick!
