Grey glass cabinet

Just as promised, I managed to get this guy moved into the house last night. But the bigger job was actually moving an even BIGGER armoire upstairs (finally!). I have been begging to move it up for months, but well, it was a big job! But with our trusted dolly the two of us worked it (him like a pro, me freaking out the whole time!). But it is nice to say it is done, and the other armoire will probably have to move with the house if we ever sell because we won't be attempting going back down!

Here was the original pine cabinet. It is so rare to find a nice cabinet with nearly all glass doors, and this one is just the right size, since it isn't too deep, for most rooms.

after a few coats of grey paint:

I LOVE the combination of light wood poking through grey and white paint!! White paint and dark wood is a great combo too, but this one just feels so beachy.
The beadboard back is so charming and adds a lot of dimension to anything displayed inside. You probably noticed that the bottom shelf is a little sparse compared with the other 3, that's because Wren is in love with that shelf and takes everything out. So it will have to be a little bare for now~

Have a great day!

This is a gorgeous armoire - love how it turned out! I feel your pain on the lower shelf! I have everything up high because of my 2 year old son - seems around 4 they start leaving my things alone again :)

What a great transformation! You're inspiring me to get out and paint the many pieces I've been putting off - thanks! :-)

Thanks so much ladies!!!
Blondie, I did paint it white first to get that effect.

Beth, Thanks for coming out and saying hello!! I would LOVE to work on your house (and you don't have to be rich or famous, I promise~).

Annie, I will be counting down the days LOL.... seriously, I will be.

Oh Holly. I've made it abundantly clear how much I just adore everything you do but this piece, may be my favorite. It.Is.Beautiful. Oh how I would love to be able to adopt this one. :) It even looks nice with the simple lower shelf courtesy of Wren's curiousity. ;)

Any tips on the slipcover question I asked you the other day... about the pillow fix? :)

Holly, this is beautiful, just what I need to see, after doing paperwork all day. You do have a vision. What color did you use? If I didn't see the pictures for myself, I wouldn't have believed that was the same cabinet. I love the transformation. Makes me wish I had a place to paint, big items, I could use the extra money. Here in New England I can't paint outside till the Spring

Hi Holly!

I have a technical question for you...I know you use a sprayer and assume since this one is pine you sprayed it first with BIN primer? If you did...do you spray that through your sprayer? I am curious because of the clean up process with BIN. I have been afraid to try it because I have having to use denatured alcohol. My paint guy told me I should never switch bases with a sprayer. Use only water base and have a second sprayer for my BIN. Such a hassle! ~mary~

Ok, sounds good. Just let me know on the beds I'm going to email her tomorrow. As far as the primer questions...sorry...didn't think to check FAQ but I did just read about it. I see you said you used Kilz to prime. So here is the next question...after about a year knot holes in pine wood with show as large dark yellow spots unless you use a shellac based primer. Does the Verathane seal them in? Do you have any pine furniture you have had for that long to know? I am curious if that works .Thanks! ~mary~

What's your tactic for painting all those slats between the glass panes, especially with a sprayer? Lots of painters tape, or plastic sheets taped in each glass pane...or no sprayer at all, just a brush? I've wondered how you do such a neat job on glass cabinet doors for awhile a now.

PS-Random other question... I'm a huge fan of the Olympics (especially the Winter Games), and have wnated to live in Canada since my middle school research project, and then even more when I became a cinema student and realized how big the industry is in BC... so, I'd love to hear from you what it's like living up there with the big games going on right now. I know it's not that close to you, and you may not be into it all (which I'd get, since other than the olympics I'm not a sports person at all), so I understand either way. Just curious, and thought I'd ask :)
Happy Weekend!

I love it in grey.

All that talk about moving big furniture is making me nervous about moving houses.

Krystal,
My grandmother actually lives in Richmond (where most of the Vancouver sports are held that are not downhill/in the mountains), and well, she hates it! It has been crazy and hectic and she just wants out LOL. But as far as living in Canada, I have to say I love it here. I loved living in California, but I could not see us raising a family there for various reasons. If you ever have the chance to move I will be happy to be your neighbor!

As for painting around the glass, it can be VERY painstaking because I remove all glass, everytime. For cabinets like this that meant completely un-assembling both the doors to remove 4 panes of glass. I think it would actually take more time to tape it all off, but for a cabinet like this I wanted the back of the panes to match too so it was necessary.

Hope you are having a great weekend!

I have been lurking/obesseing over your various creations. I was so inspired that I actually convinced my husband to drag a large armoire from neighbour's trash :) Planning refurbish it now in greay or distressed slate blue. Can you tell me where you got the lovely door pulls for your cabinet doors? I cant seem to find them at lee valley site. Live in the New York so no chance of visiting a real store :(

Krystal Wight Armstrong said...

Thanks for the thoughgtful reply. Sorry they're driving your grandmother a little crazy, I guess I can undertsand all that. And I'ms sure I'd be glad to live near such great people if we ever move as well!

I didn't realize how hard that would be to paint around windows, taking it all apart and putting it back around the panes sounds like you have to have some major skills (which we know you do), I guess you've even had to learn a bit of carpentry through all this furniture reno...which only makes it all the more impressive :)
Happy Week, Holly! And thanks for explaining that for me.
