Today we are going to be making a driftwood mirror!
You probably remember my bland-as-can-be mirror in the powder room... I had been thinking of alternative mirrors for quite some time.
Until I rounded up a bunch of driftwood at our cabin earlier this summer! I thought about trying my hand at creating on of those driftwood mirrors I see at Anthro and other various retailers. But the best part is that mine cost $0!
I started by having Sean help me with cutting some of the bigger pieces on the tablesaw to give them a flat backside. Since we will be adding more on top of these I wanted them to be pretty sturdy. The only other tool I needed was a hot glue gun. This is really a fun project, so don't get too caught up in stressing about the placement. In the end it will look great~
And here it is back in the bathroom. I really like the effect it has against all the nickel hardware.

If you wanted the wood to blend in a bit more you could try painting the frame grey before attaching the wood, but I wanted my wood to stand out. The other good thing about this project is that it isn't permanent. I tested a few areas of the frame and the hot glue can easily be peeled off if we get sick of it later!
I should have a complete before and after link for the powder room reno in the Our Renos tab within the week (I am 110% sure some of you will be shocked by the before!).

This looks wonderful! And I live near the beach, so driftwood is plentiful.

I love it! you did a great job. Also love that wall paper from anthropologie. just beautiful!
Very pretty holly! Can't wait to see the before/ after. I think we need a house tour video soon! :)
I've been wanting to try this on my mirrors in the master bath. Love that I actually get to see one done by someone! It looks fabulous! I think the kids and I are going to have to go on an adventure in the yard to collect some graying dead branches! Thanks for the inspiration1
great idea ~ looks great
Love it! I love the organic wood against the industrial hardware as well.
I made a wreath out of driftwood, if you want, you can see that here...

All I can say is love it!
I have sold a few of them, If you are looking for a more permanent glue, try goop! It can be bought at home depot and walmart. :)
Looks lovely !
I love it! You did a great job!
I LOVE that mirror - great idea and the bathroom looks great! Can you tell me what kind of toilet that is? I love the simplicity of it and am in the market for 3 new toilets in our new house! Thanks! :)
That looks great Holly! How the heck are you so creative? Hahaha! I would have never thought to do something like that!
I love it! This is a powder room right? Or one with a shower? I just ask b/c I wonder how the wood would hold up with steam and such
WOW!!! Love it! I've been thinking about a starburst mirror out of driftwood recently but a little gun-shy to try it. Thanks for the tips!!
Very cute. Stick a little starfish or something in the bottom corner for another texture. Best part----no $$$!!

I love this idea! Reason #432 I wish I lived near the beach...and not in Arizona. :)
How creative! I looks GREAT!
Love love love this! I have been wanting to incorporate driftwood into our house, but we don't have anywhere to get some near us without it costing money :) I'm too cheap I guess haha
That is such a great idea. And so easy. I think I might have to steal that idea some time soon. Immitation is the best form of flattery right. :o)
It looks great. And your bathroom, wow. I think its funny we both must have been thinking about driftwood mirrors lately, because I just finished mine.
i've wanted to do this for awhile. does the wood rot?
wow... thats very nice.
Love it!! So clever.
Amazing! This is really gorgeous - and living in Florida, I would LOVE to craft something like this for our downstairs bath - you've motivated me! You should definitely enter this into the DIY Frame Sweeps over at Craftbaby. It ends tomorrow night: http://www.craftbaby.com/contests/2/fabulous-picture-frame-sweeps
wow, amazing project! i like how fun and creative this is. did you have any difficulties using a glue gun as an adhesive? is there an alternative glue to use?
