Drop Cloth Tassles

I think this might be one of the easiest, fastest fabric projects I've done. I have a lot of ambitions when it comes to sewing and tailoring, but reality sets in as soon as I jam up the machine within minutes of starting a new project. So if you are like me and are sewing machine challenged this is will be a fast, easy way to add some softness anywhere you want to have a fun tassle.

All you need are some fabric and a good pair of fabric scissors!

The fabric I used was a drop cloth I picked up at salvation army for $2. I have gotten A LOT of use out of this sheet for various projects so even if you have to grab a new one it is still way  cheaper than a few meters of fabric at the fabric store. I have also loaded up on vintage sheets at garage sales in the past month and they would be a good alternative for this project too. 

{ Step 1 }

Lay out your fabric. I had a narrow strip left over, but if your sheet or length of fabric is fairly wide maybe cut it down to 3 or 4 feet wide.

{ Step 2 }

Cut a 18-24 inch wide strip off the end of the fabric. You can make your tassles any size you like, but I like mine to be about  2.5-3 feet long which will net out to be 1.25-1.5 foot long tassles.

 

{ Step 3 }

Fold your fabric in half

{ Step 4 }

Cut the open end of your fold and continue up to 2-3 inches from your fold. Again, strips can be any width but I like mine to be 1 inch.

{ Step 5 }

Open up your fold and lay fabric out again.

{ Step 6 }

Roll up the fabric as tightly as possible.

{ Step 7 }

Fold your rolled fabric in half again and the tie it off with a ribbon or scrap of fabric.

All done!

 

With all of the vintage/garage sale sheets I've dragged home Wren and I have been making ripped fabric garlands like mad. We are having a big barbeque this weekend and hanging tassles in the trees with garlands strung around the yard will make it a fun, whimsical party.
