I have a few fun (and super cheappp) Halloween decorating ideas to share with you this year! We seem to be drawn to creepier decorations, as opposed to funny and comical halloween decor, but you can easily put your own stamp on these ideas.
Our first haunted mansion project is a spooky old lamp.

We've made a few other changes to create a moody atmosphere as well.
Including dragging this banged up old dresser in to the entry way.
Which is where our new-old lamp will reside, so let's get on it! I started by keeping my eyes peeled for a regal looking old lamp while browsing my local thrift stores. I happened upon this old marble and brass one for $10. The shade was pretty damaged but the base was still in excellent condition so we brought it home.

Next, I took some black paint and basically smeared it on in layers with a dirty old rag. It makes it easy to play with if you use a brush to get in all the cracks and crevices, then use the rag to wipe away excess paint.
Once it looked good to me I let it dry. Then to spook it up a little more I draped some black cheese cloth over the shade (about $1.50 for a 6 foot length at the craft store).
And that's our perfectly creepy entry-way lamp, pulled together for a grand total of $11.50!

Thanks for the tip, Holly; more helpful than you know! For my Senior 'thesis' project as a cinema student I'm the Production Designer for a short, based on Plato's Cave Theory that's set in an underground distopian society in the future, and I have to get tons of props to look like they've aged over a hundred years or more to fill the scenes with. So far we've used a lot of cheese cloth & roughed up fabric, beat up some rusty metal stuff, and rubbed some muddy water on stuff to dry all dingy.
But the streaky black paint rubbed off with cloth will probably come in really useful for our next big 'town' scene on a lot of things. Thanks a bunch, and I've really loved your last couple Halloweens & their decorations.

The lamp shade with the torn netting is fantastic. I like it for Halloween and is it weird that I think it is kind of cute for general decor?!?!
